Talking of his preference for the upright Bass, I always wondered if "The Hook" really was just his index finger.Įvery upright bassist I've ever worked with, and indeed, on the occasions I've played an upright myself, it's tended to be the index & middle fingers together as one (as opposed to alternating / running).Įvery photo I've ever seen of James, he has both fingers together, rather than just his index finger striking the string. What's amazing is that he stretched every single note into tune. James refused to change the strings and refused to have the neck adjusted as a statement of his preference for upright bass. So a couple of different approaches there that will address a reasonably wide range of bass sounds. As far as subtractive rq though, I will generally just use what's in my DAW. Then there are times ill put an optical compressor on it like an LA-2A or the T-RackS Opto and/or an 1176 () for a more aggressive tone or general peak management.įor eq, I quite like the Neve () low-end punch and the SPL Bass Ranger () is quite nice too. Just looking now and its on sale at the moment too!! I've tracked through it many times as well, so the latency seems to be relatively small. It'll allow you to run two amps in parallel which I often exploit with a DI on one side, an amp/speaker combo on the other side and I'll just blend and tweak to taste. GTR () by Waves is quite effective for both bass and guitar.
